{"id":1079,"date":"2008-09-22T22:12:21","date_gmt":"2008-09-22T16:42:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.chiragmehta.info\/chirag\/?p=1079"},"modified":"2008-09-22T22:12:21","modified_gmt":"2008-09-22T16:42:21","slug":"21-years-of-marriage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.chiragmehta.info\/chirag\/2008\/09\/22\/21-years-of-marriage\/","title":{"rendered":"21 Years of Marriage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After 21 years of marriage,<br \/>\nI discovered a new way of keeping alive the spark of love.<\/p>\n<p>A little while ago, I had started to go out with another woman.<br \/>\nIt was really my wife&#8217;s idea. &#8220;I know that you love her,&#8221; she said one day,<br \/>\ntaking me by surprise. &#8220;But I love YOU too,&#8221; I protested.<br \/>\n&#8220;I know, but you also love her.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The other woman that my wife wanted me to visit was my mother,<br \/>\nwho had been a widow for 19 years,<br \/>\nbut the demands of my work and my three children had made it possible to visit her only occasionally.<\/p>\n<p>That night I called to invite her to go out for dinner and a movie.<br \/>\n&#8220;What&#8217;s wrong, are you well,&#8221; she asked?<br \/>\nMy mother is the type of woman who suspects that a late night call or a surprise invitation is a sign of bad news.<br \/>\n&#8220;I thought that it would be pleasant to pass some time with you,&#8221;<br \/>\nI responded. &#8220;Just the two of us.&#8221;<br \/>\nShe thought about it for a moment then said &#8220;I would like that very much.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>That Friday after work, as I drove over to pick her up,<br \/>\nI was a bit nervous.<br \/>\nWhen I arrived at her house,<br \/>\nI noticed that she, too, seemed to be nervous about our date.<\/p>\n<p>She waited in the door with her coat on.<br \/>\nShe had curled her hair and was wearing the dress that she had worn to celebrate her last wedding anniversary.<\/p>\n<p>She smiled from a face that was as radiant as an angel&#8217;s.<br \/>\n&#8220;I told my friends that I was going to go out with my son, and they were impressed,&#8221; she said, as she got into the car.<br \/>\n&#8220;They can&#8217;t wait to hear about our meeting&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>We went to a restaurant that, although not elegant, was very nice and cozy.<br \/>\nMy mother took my arm as if she were the First Lady.<br \/>\nAfter we sat down, I had to read the menu.<br \/>\nHer eyes could only read large print. <\/p>\n<p>Half way through the entree,<br \/>\nI lifted my eyes and saw Mom sitting there staring at me.<br \/>\nA nostalgic smile was on her lips.<br \/>\n&#8220;It was I who used to have to read the menu when you were small,&#8221; she said. &#8220;Then it&#8217;s time that you relax and let me return the favor,&#8221; I respond.<\/p>\n<p>During the dinner we had an agreeable conversation<br \/>\n&#8211; nothing extraordinary but catching up on recent events of each others life. We talked so much that we missed the movie.<br \/>\nAs we arrived at her house later, she said<br \/>\n&#8220;I&#8217;ll go out with you again, but only if you let me invite you&#8221;.<br \/>\nI agreed.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;How was your dinner date?&#8221; asked my wife when I got home.<br \/>\n&#8220;Very nice. Much more so than I could have imagined,&#8221; I answered.<\/p>\n<p>A few days later my mother died of a massive heart attack.<br \/>\nIt happened so suddenly that I didn&#8217;t have a chance to do anything for her.<\/p>\n<p>Some time later I received an envelope with a copy of a restaurant receipt from the same place mother and I had dined.<br \/>\nAn attached note said:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I paid this bill in advance.<br \/>\nI was almost sure that I couldn&#8217;t be there but, never-the-less, I paid for two plates &#8211; one for you and the other for your wife.<br \/>\nYou will never know what that night meant for me. I love you.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>At that moment I understood the importance of saying, in time:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I LOVE YOU&#8221;<br \/>\nand to give our loved ones the time that they deserve.<br \/>\nNothing in life is more important than God and your family.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After 21 years of marriage, I discovered a new way of keeping alive the spark of love.
