{"id":807,"date":"2007-06-11T14:35:57","date_gmt":"2007-06-11T09:05:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.chiragmehta.info\/chirag\/2007\/06\/11\/chip-will-run-games-on-mainframe-computers\/"},"modified":"2007-06-11T14:35:57","modified_gmt":"2007-06-11T09:05:57","slug":"chip-will-run-games-on-mainframe-computers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.chiragmehta.info\/chirag\/2007\/06\/11\/chip-will-run-games-on-mainframe-computers\/","title":{"rendered":"Chip will run games on mainframe computers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The powerful &#8220;Cell&#8221; microprocessor that fuels Sony Corp.&#8217;s PlayStation 3 video game console will be available in IBM mainframe computers so those high-performance machines can run complex online games and virtual worlds.<\/p>\n<p>Jointly developed by IBM, Sony and Toshiba Corp., Cell is touted as a &#8220;supercomputer on a chip&#8221; because of its design, which includes one central processing unit helped by eight additional processors working on specific tasks.<\/p>\n<p>Because of that unusual architecture, Cell&#8217;s use outside of PlayStations has been limited to specialized hardware for graphics-intensive functions such as military or medical applications.<\/p>\n<p>Mainframes are big computers commonly used for transaction processing and other centralized tasks.<\/p>\n<p>Despite their old-fashioned reputation, IBM&#8217;s mainframe sales have been on an upswing.
