We want every citizen to WEAR WHITE on July 26, to work, to go anywhere, in memory of those who lost heir lives in the blasts as well and to express……….

Salaried to shell out more in tax

All income earners, including the salaried and the self-employed, will soon have to fork out more tax. The Centre has finally relented on the long-standing demand from states to enhance the ceiling for tax on professions from the current level of Rs 2,500 to Rs 7,500 per year.

The tax on professions, trades, callings and employments, is a tax that the Constitution assigns to state governments/local bodies. Article 276 puts the ceiling on the tax at Rs 2,500.

The Constitution has been amended in the past to raise the tax level to bring it to the present level. Many states have been demanding that the Article should be amended again to hike the tax level to Rs 7,500 a year.

These four classified ads appeared in a newspaper on four consecutive days. The last three hopelessly trying to correct the first day’s mistake…

MONDAY: For sale – Vishanth has a sewing machine for sale. Phone 98407 16581 after 7PM and ask for Mrs Mani who lives with him cheap.

TUESDAY: Notice: We regret having erred in Vishanth’s ad yesterday. It should have read, “One sewing machine for sale cheap. Phone 98407 16581 and ask for Mrs Mani, who lives with him after 7PM.”

WEDNESDAY: Notice: Vishanth has informed us that he has received several annoying telephone calls because of the error we made in the classified ad yesterday. The ad stands correct as follows: “For sale – Vishanth has a sewing machine for sale; Cheap. Phone 98407 16581 after 7PM and ask for Mrs. Mani who loves with him.

THURSDAY: Notice: I, Vishanth, have no sewing machine for sale. I smashed it. Don’t call 98407 16581 as I have had the phone disconnected. I have not been carrying on with Mrs. Mani. Until yesterday, she was my housekeeper but she quit!

China’s online transactions are expected to be worth $125 billion this year, a sharp rise from last year’s $87.5 billion, a report said on Tuesday.

China’s online transactions are expected to be worth one trillion yuan ($125 billion) this year, up from last year’s 700 billion yuan ($87.5 billion), a China Centre for Information Industry Development Consulting report said.

China’s e-commerce transaction volume has grown by 50-60 per cent over the past couple of years and is expected to maintain fast growth for several years to come, it said.

The number of Chinese netizens has surpassed 110 million and more than 40 million personal computers have access to broadband.

“It means China’s infrastructure is ready for a boom in e-commerce,” an analyst with CCID Consulting, Chi Congbing said.

Mumbai to halt in tribute to blast victims

As a mark of respect for the victims of the Mumbai blasts, President APJ Abdul Kalam will lead the country in observing a two-minute silence at 6:24 pm (IST) today from Mahim Railway Station.

At 6.24 pm, 270 sirens installed across Mumbai by the Civil Defence Corps will go off as an alert for the two minute silence.

At 6.25 pm, Mumbai will observe a two minute silence to pay homage to the victims of the seven blasts.
