SC allows `Blue Lady’ to drop anchor

The Supreme Court on Monday allowed a former cruise liner that environmental activists say contains toxic asbestos to enter Indian waters, but said it could only be scrapped once it was declared safe.

Greenpeace and other groups say the 46,000-tonne Blue Lady, which is sailing for the Alang shipbreaking yard in Gujarat to be dismantled, contains more than 900 tonnes of asbestos.

Activists say Indian yards lack the modern technology to safely handle such waste, putting the health of workers at risk.

While refusing to ban the ship, the court said customs and port authorities would verify the amount of contaminants on board and report their findings to it.

A decision would then be made on whether work on scrapping the vessel could be carried out safely at the Indian yard.

SC dismisses petition on Fanaa screening

The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a petition filed by film maker Mahesh Bhatt seeking a direction for the Gujarat government for the peaceful screening of the Aamir Khan starrer ‘Fanaa’ in the state.

A vacation bench comprising Justice Arijit Pasayat and Justice C K Thakker, however, said if theatre owners in Gujarat like to exhibit the movie, they can seek police protection for the same.

Meanwhile, theatre owners in Gujarat are unwilling to screen Aamir Khan starrer `Fanaa’ in the state, despite the Supreme Court saying on Monday that they could seek police protection to exhibit the movie.

We have just heard of the Supreme Court decision. However, we maintain our stand of not screening `Fanaa’ as Aamir Khan has not yet apologised to the people of Gujarat for his anti-Narmada dam stand,” Manubhai Patel, President of Multiplex Owners Association told PTI.

Skype latest victim of patent suit

Newark-based internet telephony company, Net2Phone has taken on eBay and its subsidiary peer-to-peer VoIP provider Skype in a lawsuit, alleging that Skype has infringed its patent for the placing of calls over the net.

The law suit, filed in the US District court of Newark, alleges that Skype infringed a patent filed by Net2Phone under US Patent Class 704, which broadly covers data processing encompassing speech signal processing, linguisitics, language translation, and audio compression/decompression.

Like other law suits filed recently against big name companies with deep pockets, the Net2Phone suit is going for broke, seeking damages and an injunction against further infringement, which would basically mean shutting the Skype service down.

Office, Vista changed in wake of Adobe threat

Microsoft is making changes to the next versions of both Office and Windows as part of an effort to head off a legal challenge from Adobe Systems.

Microsoft said earlier Friday that it expects an antitrust suit from Adobe after months of negotiations in which the companies failed to reach an accord.

The software maker is unilaterally making changes to both Office 2007 and Windows Vista in an effort to assuage some of Adobe’s concerns. More important, the move is an attempt to lower the chances that an injunction could stop Microsoft from shipping those products.

“We don’t want anything to stand in the way of customers getting their hands on the product,” Microsoft Vice President Chris Capossela told CNET News.com in a telephone interview on Friday. “We certainly are trying to be a good partner here.”

Vista’s firewall dissected

Longtime readers know that I feel passionately about having a personal firewall on a desktop PC, especially a home PC. A fair number of malware programs can be stopped at the Internet gateway, before they get to your desktop, creating an in-depth defense. Recognizing this, Microsoft changed the default setting for its Windows Firewall in Windows XP SP2 from Disable to Enable. But the Windows XP SP2 firewall blocks only inbound connections–useful, yes, but this also means that if you have spyware living on your PC, it’ll still be able to phone home as an outbound connection. Thus, I recommend that everyone using Windows XP SP2 also use trusted third-party firewalls from CheckPoint (makers of ZoneAlarm) or security vendors, such as Trend Micro.

With Vista, Microsoft says it’s finally including “bidirectional filtering as well as integrating IPSec protocols.” Microsoft also assures me that in Windows Vista all inbound connections will be blocked by default, whereas all outbound connections will be allowed by default, other than by exception. What does that mean? Well, it’s less than you might think.

Fanna – SHAYARIS…..

Ack:~ Saurabh Rawane

E Khuda Aaj Ye Faisla Karde,
Use Mera ya Mujhe Uska Karde.
Bahut Dukh Sahe He Maine,
Koi Khusi Ab Toh Muqadar Karde.
Bahot Muskil Lagta Hai Usse Duur Rehna,
Judai Ke Safar Ko Kum Karde.
Jitna Duur Chale Gaye Woh Mujhse,
Use Utna Kareeb Karde.
Nahi Likha Agar Nasib Me Uska Naam,
To Khatam Kar Ye Zindagi aur Mujhe FANAA Karde.

Tere Dile mein meri saanson ko panah mil jaaye Tere Ishq mein meri Jaan Fanaa Ho jaayeâ.

Ankhen to pyar me dilki zuban hoti hai,
sachi chahat to sada bezuban hoti hai,
pyar mai dard bhi mile to kya gabrana,
suna hai dard se chahat aur jawan hoti hai….

Phool hun Gulaab kaâ?
Chameli ka mat samjhnaâ?
Aashiq hun aapkaâ?
Apni Saheli ka mat samjhnaâ

Dur Humse Jaa Paoge Kaise,
Humko Bhool Paoge Kaise.
Hum Who Khushbu Jo Saanson Mein Utar Jaye, Khud Apni Saanxon Ko Rok Paoge Kaise..

Bekhudi Ki Zindagi Hum Jiya Nahi Karte,
Yun kisika ka Jaam Hum Piya Nahi Karte.
Unse Kehdo Mohabbat Ka Izhaar Aakar Khud Karein,
Yun Kisika Peecha Hum Nahin Karteâ

RONE DE TU AAJ HAMAKO TU AANKHE SUJANE DE
BAHO ME LELE AUR KHUD KO BHEEG JANE DE
HAI JO SEENE ME QUAID DARIYA WO CHUT JAYEGA
HAI ITANA DARD KI TERA DAMAN BHEEG JAYEGA..

tere dil mein meri saanson ko jagah mil jaaye
tere ishq mein meri jaan fanaa ho jaaye
adhoori saans thi dhadkan adhoori thi adhooren ham
magar ab chaand poora hain falak pe aur ab pooren hain ham

Aag suraj mein hoti hai ,
sehna sab ko padta hai
mohabbar nigahe karti hai
sehna dil ko padta hai

log kahete hai mohabbat mein neend ud jati hai
koi hum ko mohabbat karna sikha de
hum ko neend bahot aati hai

Google denies browser plans

Reuters -Thursday, June 01, 2006 00:32 IST

Google Inc has no plans to build a Web browser software to compete with rival Microsoft Corp, Chief Executive Eric Schmidt said on Wednesday.

At a conference call with Wall Street analysts, Schmidt dismissed speculation that the company aimed to tie together its Web search and other services to compete with Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, the world’s dominant Web browser.

“It looks like people have some good browsers choices already, Schmidt said.

“We would not build a browser for the fun of building a browser, he said.

Google encourages its customers to use a variety of alternatives to Internet Explorer, particularly the open-source Firefox browser.

GDP breaks into gallop, crosses 9.3%

Indians produced Rs25,95,339 crore worth of goods and services in 2005-06 — an 8.4 per cent increase over last year. And they got richer as well: per capita income is now Rs25,825 as against Rs23,222 last year.

This is the second time in three years that the economy has had a date with eight: it grew 8.5 per cent in 2003-04. Much of this was because farmers produced more: the agriculture sector grew 3.9 per cent in 2005-06 — an unexpected turnaround indeed.

But that is not all. More residential and commercial buildings are being constructed, and people are spending more on goods and transport, eating out and talking non-stop on the phone. The gross domestic product (GDP) growth figure surprised many. “I’m shell-shocked, said Rajiv Kumar, director, Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations. “But it’s nice to be in the China league. China has been growing at 9 per cent for several years now.

Woman raped every half hour in India

A woman is raped every half an hour in India, while one is killed every 75 minutes — usually burnt to death for not bringing a large enough dowry.

Violence against children rose by nearly a quarter in 12 months and recorded cases of female foeticide increased by a half in 2004, according to the National Crime Records Bureau.

Its latest report, based on 2004 data and obtained by Reuters on Wednesday, will be submitted to Parliament in July.

The national capital, New Delhi, is the least safe place for women.
