IT professionals across all levels can now check whether their employers are paying them adequately or not. IIM-A, IISc along with nation-wide ITPF (IT Professionals Forum) have launched ITPaycheck.com, which provides latest compensation status of different positions across the IT and BPO sector.

From software engineer and sales executive to project manager and vice president, the site caters to all.

According to ITPaycheck.com, the total remuneration for a vice president in the IT industry is Rs 22,95,163 approximately. The total variable pay of a V-P in the industry is approximately Rs 19,70,658.

In contrast, a software engineer in the industry gets about Rs 4,61,774 as total pay and Rs 4,32,334 as total variable pay.

Gates puts spotlight on security

A week after launching what he called the most secure Windows version ever, Bill Gates outlined a strategy for Microsoft Corp. and the rest of the industry to improve security in the broader online world.

In one example, Gates said last week that Windows will support a grass-roots technology for signing in to Web sites using automated digital credentials, rather than typing passwords each time. Microsoft said its decision to back the OpenID initiative dovetails with a new identification system built into Windows Vista.

Free phone calls from your browser

Skype rival Gizmo Project has introduced a new service that lets the public make free phone calls from web browsers.

Dubbed Gizmo Call, the service provides free calls to most fixed lines around the world and to “select” mobile phones. We couldn’t find a list of which destinations are accepted for free calls, but it seems a fair guess that they are the same as the “all calls free” list that applies to Gizmo Project users.

Major destinations include Canada, China, Malaysia, Russia, Singapore and South Korea. Landline only nations include most European nations, Japan, several South American countries, Taiwan, Australia and New Zealand

Yahoo pipes out a challenge to Google

There is so much information circulating throughout the web in the form of XML feeds that it’s hard to keep track of it all. However, Yahoo wants to make it easy for ordinary web surfers to pick the eyes out of it all and organize it into a custom made useful format with tools from a website called Yahoo Pipes.

As Yahoo says on its website, Pipes is a hosted service that lets you remix feeds and create new data mashups in a visual programming environment.

According to Yahoo, the usefulness of the huge volume of XML feeds available to web users has been limited because users are restricted to feed readers which can access the information from one feed. However, Pipes allows users to take the data from one or more feeds and use it to build new applications

Intel develops 80-core supercomputer processor on fingernail

Chip maker Intel researchers have developed the world’s first programmable processor that delivers supercomputer-like performance from a single, 80-core chip not much larger than the size of a finger nail.

The new chip is the result of research aimed at delivering Teraflops performance for future PCs and servers. Technical details of the Teraflops research chip will be presented at the annual Integrated Solid State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) this week in San Francisco.

Google launches Google Maps Australia

Google today launched Google Maps Australia at http://maps.google.com.au, which enables users in Australia to find local information using online mapping facility.  In addition to map and satellite images, the expanded service includes Australian business listings, driving directions and support for Google Maps for mobile.

The launch of Google Maps Australia is aimed at businesses who want to target information about their services to users searching within a local area. It is also enable Google AdWords advertisers to reach customers searching for businesses, products and services in Australia using locally targeted advertisements.

Ratan Tata takes off in F-16

After sealing the $12-billion jumbo deal to buy Anglo-Dutch steel-maker Corus, Tata Group chairman Ratan Tata pulled off another surprise by flying a fighter jet at the Aero India Show in Bangalore on Thursday.

Tata, 69, undertook the feat during the Bangalore air show, in which the makers of F-16 – US-based aerospace major Lockheed Martin – participated.

“He (Tata) has undergone medical check-up, briefing and ground training,” a source told PTI ahead of the flight scheduled on Thursday afternoon.

The Tatas are not new to aviation. Ratan Tata’s predecessor JRD Tata is celebrated as father of India’s civil aviation. JRD Tata had launched Tata Airlines in 1932, which was nationalised in 1953 and rechristened Air-India.

“I don’t get spare time, but whatever time I have is spent flying. I am a trained pilot for both planes and helicopters,” Tata had earlier said.

Though Tata Group now holds under 10 per cent stake in no-frills carrier SpiceJet, Ratan Tata has ruled out plans to enter the civil aviation space. Ratan Tata himself flies the Falcon 200 owned by group company Indian Hotels.

Microsoft nightmare continues – Google Docs to support Powerpoint

As if Microsoft didn’t have enough to worry about after the lukewarm response to Vista and Office 2007, Google’s free online office suite is set to do Powerpoint as well.

Code-named Google Presently, the presentation feature is set to become a part of Google Docs & Spreadsheets which, as the name suggests, currently offers document and spreadsheet editing. Users will be able to convert a document into a presentation, create slides and view the presentation in full-screen, reports unofficial Google-watching blog Google Operating System.

Presently is a play on Writely, the name of the online document editor Google acquired last year and combined with an online spreadsheet to create Google Docs & Spreadsheets
