With the entry of IT giants like Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Microsoft, Gujarat is hoping for a boom in this industry.
“Earlier we were not able to attract investments because there were communal riots, the attack on the Akshardham temple and so on. Now it is happening at the Infocity,” said Anupam Saxena of Creative Infocity Ltd, which holds a major stake in the IT park project promoted by the state government.
He said government policies had led to a reduction of around 40 percent in the cost of setting up IT businesses in Gujarat.
Along with Microsoft and TCS, around 40 companies are at the Infocity, which is close to the state capital Gandhinagar and was constructed in 2000.
BJP rebels may have called Modi a ‘Hitler’ during an anti-Modi protest, but Germany’s infamous dictator continues to be glorified in social science textbooks printed by the Gujarat State Board of School Textbooks.
Last year, a city-based NGO Prashant filed a petition demanding withdrawal of the Class IX textbook representing Adolf Hitler as a nationalist. Israel’s Councilor General David Zohar Zoshine had also visited Ahmedabad, met state education secretary P Pernneerveel and demanded withdrawal of the text.
After the Supreme Court issued directions to the Gujarat government to provide police protection to cinemas screening Fanaa, a theatre in Jamnagar has decided to release Aamir Khan-Kajol starrer movie.
“On the demand of the people of Jamnagar, we have decided to release Fanaa on Tuesday and will screen three shows daily,” Mansur Sheikh, the manager of the Ambar theatre, said over phone from Jamnagar.
“After Supreme Court’s order on Monday, we had asked for police protection and the administration has provided us with it,” Sheikh said.
The Supreme Court on Monday allowed a former cruise liner that environmental activists say contains toxic asbestos to enter Indian waters, but said it could only be scrapped once it was declared safe.
Greenpeace and other groups say the 46,000-tonne Blue Lady, which is sailing for the Alang shipbreaking yard in Gujarat to be dismantled, contains more than 900 tonnes of asbestos.
Activists say Indian yards lack the modern technology to safely handle such waste, putting the health of workers at risk.
While refusing to ban the ship, the court said customs and port authorities would verify the amount of contaminants on board and report their findings to it.
A decision would then be made on whether work on scrapping the vessel could be carried out safely at the Indian yard.
The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a petition filed by film maker Mahesh Bhatt seeking a direction for the Gujarat government for the peaceful screening of the Aamir Khan starrer ‘Fanaa’ in the state.
A vacation bench comprising Justice Arijit Pasayat and Justice C K Thakker, however, said if theatre owners in Gujarat like to exhibit the movie, they can seek police protection for the same.
Meanwhile, theatre owners in Gujarat are unwilling to screen Aamir Khan starrer `Fanaa’ in the state, despite the Supreme Court saying on Monday that they could seek police protection to exhibit the movie.
“We have just heard of the Supreme Court decision. However, we maintain our stand of not screening `Fanaa’ as Aamir Khan has not yet apologised to the people of Gujarat for his anti-Narmada dam stand,” Manubhai Patel, President of Multiplex Owners Association told PTI.
Fanaa, the much-awaited big release of the year starring Aamir Khan and Kajol, is in trouble.
The Gujarat BJP youth wing has said that it would not allow any Aamir Khan film to be screened in the state until he apologises for supporting the Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA).
The BJP had previously agitated against the actor when he expressed solidarity with Medha Patkar and the NBA.
“We did not allow the screening of Rang De Basanti in Gujarat after he (Aamir Khan) visited the NBA in New Delhi. Now, we will not allow his forthcoming film Fanaa to be screened anywhere in the state,” said Shankar Chaudhary, President of the BJP youth wing.
“We will request the Gujarat Multiplex Association and Cinema Association not to screen any film of Aamir Khan in their theatres,” he further added.

BANGALORE: The board of governors of the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore (IIM-B) will meet next week to discuss the human resource development ministry’s decision to turn down its proposal to set up a campus in Singapore.
“We will discuss all options (about offering courses in Singapore) at the meeting next week,” IIM-B director Prakash G. Apte said.
The Ministry Wednesday turned down the proposal from IIM-B, one of the six IIMs, India’s premier managements schools, saying that it should first focus on meeting the domestic demand.
“We have been told to first meet the growing demand for management graduates in the country before venturing outside. We don’t think the ministry has an issue if we offer short-term programmes overseas,” Apte said.
The board, headed by Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani, will meet Jan 20 to explore options for the institute’s Singapore plans.
