A contest to support innovative business ideas

Teams should come up with business plan from socially relevant idea Winners will receive up to Rs.3 lakh as seed funding to implement the ideas The Indian Institute of Technology-Madras (IIT-M), Tata Consultancy Services and Lemelson Recognition and Mentoring Program (L-Ramp) are jointly hosting `Genesis,’ a business plan contest open for students and NGOs in social entrepreneurship.

It will essentially support innovative business ideas relating to social causes. MIT IDEAS, United States (from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an NGO Aavishkar India Micro Venture capital fund are partners in the contest. Teams participating in the contest will have to come up with a viable business plan from a socially relevant idea that will be self-sustaining. While students, individuals and NGOs interested in social causes can participate, each team is expected to have a representation for the student community up to 50 per cent.

Workshops To explain the contest and as part of Genesis, a series of workshops will be conducted at IIT-Madras on January 13 and 14. No entry free is charged but those interested should register online at ( www.genesis.iitm.ac.in ) . Seats for the workshops are limited.

Indian experts to teach Ayurveda in US schools

In a bid to make alternative medicine more popular in the US, Indian experts may soon start teaching medical students about Ayurveda in some of America’s best colleges.

“The proposal is in the pipeline. We want to make Indian alternative medicine more popular in the west,Shiv Basant, joint secretary in the Department of Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy told PTI.

The ayurveda experts are likely to take a short course for the US medical students under the Complementary Alternative Medicine in 16 colleges. Basant said for the past two years they have initiated international exchange programmes to promote India’s traditional

BSNL to launch IPTV in 3 months

Indian telecom major Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) has commenced testing of its Internet Protocol TV (IPTV) service in Pune. It is following the footsteps of its competitor, MTNL, which had already launched the service in New Delhi and will soon offer it in Mumbai.

The company has tied up with the Maharashtra Knowledge Corporation Ltd (MKCL), a state government company, for integration of information technology in education and DiviNet, an infrastructure and technology provider.

Book Airline Tickets through SMS

Hutch, a leading telecom service provider, announced the facility to book domestic airline tickets with access to flight information through SMS. To provide this exclusive service, Hutch has entered into an alliance with Flightraja.com, a Bangalore-based online travel portal.

According to the Chief Marketing Officer of Hutchison Essar Ltd, Mr Naveen Chopra, the facility is provided in three easy steps. “This is the first time in the world that a service like this is being rolled out,” added Mr Vinay Gupta, Chief Executive Officer of Flightraja.

Payments can be made through VISA or Master Credit Cards and the entire transaction is encrypted providing complete safety and security, the Press release said.

Indian origin teenager to contest Finnish polls

Helsinki, Nov 1 (IANS) Alisha Hasan, 18, is quite unlike other teenagers in Finland, not because she was born in India and is a member of the small Indian community here. She will be one of the youngest candidates contesting Finland’s parliamentary polls next year.

‘I will be contesting polls from Helsinki. I am hopeful of being backed by one of the prominent political parties. I think I can win if I can get a good campaign manager,’ Hasan told a visiting IANS correspondent. ‘I am trying to raise funds needed to contest the polls, and the response so far has been quite encouraging. I have already started my campaign,’ she added. Incidentally, politics is not the only passion this teenager has. ‘I am already a film director. Last year I directed a Finnish film.

Tatas buy fancy watermaker for $677m

In what is the largest Indian acquisition abroad so far, Tata Sons and Tata Tea have signed a definitive agreement to acquire a 30% stake in US-based enhanced water maker Glaceau, with an investment of $677 million.

The stake is being bought in Energy Brands Inc, which owns Glaceau, from US-based leading private equity firm TSG Consumer Partners.

Glaceau products fall in the health and wellness category and its brands include nutrient-enhanced Vitaminwater, electrolyte-enhanced Smartwater and flavour-enhanced Fruitwater.

Energy Brands sells five million bottles of Glaceau water products daily, and the investment brings the Tata group in direct competition with PepsiCo Inc, which is the US leader in non-soda sales, with 49% of the market. Arch rival Coca-Cola has a 25% share.

Vodafone may up Airtel stake to 20 per cent

UK-based Vodafone Group plc, the largest mobile services provider in the world, is considering increasing its equity stake in Bharti Airtel to 20% as part of its plans to double revenues from emerging markets over the next three years.

Sources said the hike could be sewn up “in 2-3 months�.

In an email statement from the UK, a Vodafone spokesman confirmed the intent: “We are interested in increasing our stake in Bharti Airtel. However, any increase is dependent on other shareholdings being available for purchase. Such shareholdings are not currently available.�

That’s partly because Bharti Airtel has already hit the 74% ceiling for foreign investment as a result of a change in the way such shareholding is accounted for.
