GMail in Indian Languages

Chandramouli Mahadevan shares his experience about Indian Language usage in composing emails …

It’s hard for me to imagine going without email for a day. It’s such an easy and convenient way to communicate with my friends and family. However, there was one limitation that bothered me: my family members and friends who prefer to communicate in Hindi did not have an easy way to type and send email in their language of choice. I am extremely happy to announce the launch of a new feature in Gmail that makes it easy to type email in Indian languages.

When you compose a new mail in Gmail, you should now see an icon with an Indian character, as the screenshot below shows. This feature is enabled by default for Gmail users in India. If you do not see this function enabled by default, you will need to go the “Settings” page and enable this option in the “Language” section.

When you click the Indian languages icon, you can type words the way they sound in English and Gmail will automatically convert the word to its Indian local language equivalent. For example, if a Hindi speaker types “namaste” we will transliterate this to “??????.” Similarly, “vanakkam” in Tamil will become “???????.” We currently support five Indian languages — Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam — and you can select the language of your choice from the drop-down list next to the icon.

We built this new feature using Google’s transliteration technology, which is also available on Google India Labs, Orkut, Blogger and iGoogle. I hope you find this feature useful to communicate with those of your friends and family who prefer to write in their native language, and it will be available soon to businesses and schools using Google Apps. Now back to replying to all those Hindi emails I got from my family and friends today!

Famous Sayings – Who Said ???

It was the first day of a school in USA and a new Indian student named Chandrasekhar Subramanian entered the fourth grade. The teacher said, ‘Let’s begin by reviewing some American History.

Who said ‘Give me Liberty, or give me Death’?
She saw a sea of blank faces, except for Chandrasekhar, who had his hand
up: ‘Patrick Henry, 1775’ he said.
‘Very good!’

Who said ‘Government of the People, by the People, for the People, shall not perish from the Earth?’
Again, no response except from Chandrasekhar.
‘Abraham Lincoln, 1863’ said Chandrasekhar.

The teacher snapped at the class, ‘Class, you should be ashamed.Chandrasekhar, who is new to our country, knows more about its history than you do.’

She heard a loud whisper: ‘F*** the Indians,’
‘Who said that?’ she demanded.
Chandrasekhar put his hand up. ‘General Custer, 1862.’

At that point, a student in the back said,’I’m gonna puke.’
The teacher glares around and asks ‘All right! Now, who said that?’
Again, Chandrasekhar says, ‘Al Gore to the Japanese Prime Minister,1991.’

Now furious, another student yells, ‘Oh yeah? S**k this!’
Chandrasekhar jumps out of his chair waving his hand and shouts to the teacher , ‘Bill Clinton, to Monica Lewinsky, 1997!’

Now with almost mob hysteria someone said ‘You little shit. If you say anything else, I’ll kill you.’
Chandrasekhar frantically yells at the top of his voice, ‘Michael Jackson to the child witnesses testifying against him- 2004.’

The teacher fainted. And as the class gathered around the teacher on the floor, someone said, ‘Oh sh*t, we’re f*****d!’
And Chandrasekhar said quietly, I think it was George Bush, Iraq ,2007.’

GMail Labs : Multiple Inboxes

Octavian says …

I’m seriously into filters and labels. All the email I get related to Flash goes under my “flash” label, everything about paragliding goes under “flying,” and they all skip my inbox because that’s how I like to stay organized. But when new email arrives I have to switch to the “flash” label first, then click on “paragliding,” etc. I wanted a way to see it all at once.

So when I heard about Gmail Labs, I started implementing a Labs feature in my 20% time that would help me (and you!) spend less time monitoring important messages that may end up getting filtered away. Starting today, you can try Multiple Inboxes, a Labs experiment which makes it possible to have more than one ‘inbox’ in your default Gmail view.

An image is worth a thousand words, so here’s what my inbox looks like:

In addition to a quick view of my important labels, I also like to keep all my starred and draft messages in separate panels.

After you turn on Multiple Inboxes from the Labs tab under Settings, you can configure what you want to see, as well as set the number of messages displayed and the positioning of your panels from the Multiple Inboxes section under Settings.

However you choose to use it, let us know how we can improve the Multiple Inboxes experiment — all feedback is welcome.

Strength of a Man & Beauty of a Woman

The strength of a man
The strength of a man isn’t seen in the width of his shoulders.
It is seen in the width of his arms that encircle you.
The strength of a man isn’t in the deep tone of his voice.
It is in the gentle words he whispers.
The strength of a man isn’t how many buddies he has.
It is how good a buddy he is with his kids.
The strength of a man isn’t in how respected he is at work.
It is in how respected he is at home.
The strength of a man isn’t in how hard he hits..
It is in how tender he touches.
The strength of a man isn’t how many women he’s Loved by.
It is in can he be true to one woman.
The strength of a man isn’t in the weight he can lift.
It is in the burdens he can understand and overcome.

The beauty of a woman
Is not in the clothes she wears,
The figure she carries,
Or the way she combs her hair.
The beauty of a woman
Must be seen from her eyes,
Because that is the doorway to her heart,
The place where love resides.
The beauty of a woman
Is not in a facial mole,
But true beauty in a woman
Is reflected in her soul.
It is the caring that she lovingly gives,
The passion that she shows,
The beauty of a woman
With passing years-only grows.

Hottest Vegetarian

The veggie voters have spoken, and American Idol winner Carrie Underwood and Coldplay frontman Chris Martin have been selected as PETA’s 2005 “World’s Sexiest Vegetarians”, narrowly edging out a host of other veggie Valentinos and Venuses, including David Duchovny, Reese Witherspoon, Joss Stone, Avril Lavigne, Joaquin Phoenix and Prince, as well as previous winners Tobey Maguire, Andre 3000, Josh Hartnett, Alicia Silverstone, Natalie Portman and Shania Twain.

Going green is all the rage among the red carpet set. Celebrities cite many reasons for forgoing flesh foods, from avoiding the cruelty that is inherent in all meat production to improving their health and energy levels to helping the environment by not contributing to factory-farm pollution.

Country crooner Carrie Underwood – whose single “Inside Your Heaven” debuted at number one on the Billboard charts – wore a “V Is for Vegetarian” T-shirt on American Idol, sending her popularity soaring among animal lovers everywhere.

Chris Martin and his band, Coldplay, have also gone to number one on the Billboard charts with their album X & Y, which topped the music mag’s “Hot 200” albums list. Martin and his wife, Gwyneth Paltrow, are known for their love of vegan cuisine, and they made international headlines recently when they gave their daughter, Apple, a vegan birthday cake from Moby’s New York eatery called “teany”.

In India, Bollywood’s monopoly of PETA India’s most recent “hottest” poll found that the “Hottest Male Vegetarian” was the venerable Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan, who continues to rule the Indian film industry. But he faced stiff competition from formidable opponents such as President Abdul Kalam, wealthy industrialist Anil Ambani, hot actor Shahid Kapoor, cricketer Anil Kumble and Simpoo, the Channel [V] mascot who kicked the meat habit and is now a vegetarian!

Long-time PETA pal Alicia Silverstone, best known for her starring roles in the films Clueless and Batman & Robin, as well as the TV series Miss Match and Braceface, made a “debut” of a different sort in India. Thousands of postcards featuring her in a curve-hugging pleather “Batgirl” suit – like the one she wore in Batman & Robin – along with a plea not to support the cruel leather trade were placed in the finest restaurants and cafés in Delhi and Mumbai by PETA India. The blonde beauty captured the title of “Hottest Female Vegetarian”, marking the first time that an international celebrity beat out competitors of the likes of Pamela Anderson.

Other top finishers in the PETA India poll included the evergreen Dev Anand, “Bond” man Pierce Brosnan and Lord of the Rings star Orlando Bloom in the men’s category and Amrita Rao, Victoria Beckham and Avanti Birla in the women’s category. Simpoo finished in the top five.

All of PETA’s nominees are super-hot, exuding vegetarian vitality. They get their zest from aubergines and their passion from potatoes. More and more celebrities want to avoid supporting the suffering inflicted on the billions of animals who are raised and killed for food each year – and they also know that vegetarians are typically healthier than meat-eaters. Consumption of meat and other animal products has been conclusively linked to heart disease, strokes, diabetes and cancer, as well as infection by salmonella and other bacteria. Vegetarians are also hotter: On average, vegetarians are thinner and trimmer than meat-eaters and less prone to impotence – the cholesterol and saturated fat in animal-derived protein clog arteries leading to all major organs, not just the heart.

From Bollywood to Hollywood and all places in between, both famous and not-so-famous people are realising that the best thing they can do for animals – and themselves – is to adopt a healthy, humane and delicious vegetarian diet.

Subprime Crisis: Falling Like Dominos Towards Disaster

Home Buyers Go Shopping
The home has long been touted as a key to financial security. Government policy encourages home ownership by providing federal income tax deductions on mortgage interest and requiring that lenders issue mortgages in poor neighborhoods. Renters are eager to buy and many homeowners trade up several times during their lifetime.

Interest Rates Fall
Interest rates fall to rarely seen lows, allowing the same monthly payment to support a larger loan. This makes homes affordable for people who previously had rented, and it allows homeowners to move up to properties that are more expensive.

Home Prices Rise
By allowing people to borrow more, low interest rates allow them to offer more when they bid on homes, driving home prices up.

Adjustable-Rate Loans
Home buyers finding prices getting out of reach resort to subprime and other adjustable-rate loans that start with low “teaser” rates allowing a person with a given income to qualify for a larger loan. After one, two or three years, rates reset by tracking an index of prevailing rates, causing monthly payments to rise.

Appraisers Help
Before issuing a mortgage, a lender requires that a property be appraised to assure that it is valuable enough to serve as collateral on the loan. Appraisers come under pressure from lenders and real estate agents to support the rapidly increasing home values, despite a growing belief that home prices are in a bubble.

Lenders Relax Standards
As home prices grow faster than incomes, it gets harder for borrowers to qualify for loans under traditional standards. To keep the volume of lending up, lenders gradually reduce down payment requirements from the traditional 10 percent of sales price to zero. They also stop requiring that borrowers prove they have enough income to make their loan payments.

Investors Seek Yield
With interest rates at unusually low levels, institutional investors — such as hedge funds, pension funds, endowments and insurers — hunt around for higher yields with investment-grade ratings. They are eager to buy securities backed by mortgages, since these pay more than U.S. Treasuries. Securities backed by subprime loans pay even more, since subprime borrowers are charged extra-high interest rates.

Securities Firms Comply
Banks and other securities firms such as Bear Stearns feed the yield-hungry investors by repackaging mortgages into mortgage-backed securities offering generous yields. Through this process of securitization, the mortgage lenders’ risk is passed on to investors around the world.

Ratings Agencies Help
Ratings agencies work with mortgage issuers, such as banks and other lenders, and loan packagers to find innovative ways to give investment-grade ratings to risky mortgage-backed securities. While ratings involve an assessment of the chance that borrowers will default, there is little track record for gauging this risk with the new types of securities, so ratings agencies and other participants rely on theoretical computer models.

Interest Rates Rise
As rates go up, resets cause monthly payments on adjustable-rate mortgages to soar, reaching levels many homeowners cannot afford.

Home Prices Fall
Higher interest rates mean a borrower with a given income must settle for a smaller mortgage. As fewer people qualify for big loans, home prices begin to drop.

Borrowers in Trouble
Rising interest rates push up monthly payments on adjustable-rate mortgages, and growing numbers of homeowners fall behind in payments.

Securities Lose Value
The growing mortgage delinquency rate exceeds expectations in the computer models, causing prices of mortgage-backed securities to plummet. Financial institutions that invested in them suffer enormous losses.

Credit Markets Freeze
Financial-market participants worry that institutions losing money on mortgage securities – the list includes investment houses and large institutional investors – may be forced to sell securities based on other types of debt, such as bonds, to raise money. That would cause a flood of supply that would depress prices. Investors thus become leery of all types of debt securities, causing prices to drop and making some nearly impossible to trade.

The Economy Slows
As it becomes harder for individuals and companies to borrow, economic activity slows. The economy heads toward recession.

Homeowner Feels Impact
Growing numbers of homeowners find they cannot afford their higher mortgage payments, and many discover their homes are no longer worth what they owe on their mortgages. As the economy weakens, unemployment rises. More and more homeowners fall behind in mortgage payments and enter the foreclosure process. They lose their homes, their jobs, or both.

Credit Markets Freeze
Financial-market participants worry that institutions losing money on mortgage securities may be forced to sell other types of securities to raise money. That would cause a flood of supply that would depress prices. Investors thus become leery of all types of debt securities, causing prices to drop and making some securities nearly impossible to trade.
