Linux Vulnerability Report Draws Criticism

A U.S. government study that reports there were three times more software vulnerabilities in the Linux/ Unix platform than in the Windows platform during 2005 not only is drawing criticism from the open-source community but also has prompted questions from security authorities.

Cyber Security Bulletin 2005, published last week by the United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US-CERT), indicates that, out of 5,198 reported flaws, 812 were Windows vulnerabilities, 2,328 were Linux/Unix flaws, and 2,058 were multiple system vulnerabilities. Open to Interpretation In response to the report, NewsForge.com pointed out that, while many in the trade press have concluded that Windows is three times safer than Linux, the government figures are somewhat misleading.

    The Browser Wars of 2005

Microsoft’s Internet Explorer (IE) remains the largest stakeholder in browser market share, but it lost ground in 2005. Web browser statistics for yearend 2005 released by NetApplications.com indicate movement in browser market share for 2006.

IE ended 2005 with an 85.05 percent market share, down from 90.31 percent in 2004. Microsoft’s decision to discontinue support for its browser on the Mac could lead to further degradation of its market share. NetApplications’ EVP of marketing and strategic relationships, Vince Vizzaccaro, said Mac users will likely migrate to Apple’s Safari browser. Microsoft is due to release an upgrade to IE this year.

Tennis to get a boost with Hawkeye technology

MUMBAI: This is a move aimed at boosting the accuracy of line calls during a tennis event.

A technology ‘Hawk-Eye Officiating’ will be used for the first time ever at a major men’s tennis tournament. It makes its debut appearance as the “Eagle Eye by Barclaysâ€? at this year’s Masters Tennis tournament at the Royal Albert Hall.

The technology, which uses cameras to track the ball’s trajectory and sends information to a virtual reality machine, has been used at Grand Slam and ATP Tennis Masters Series events for the past three years, but only on television as an analytical tool for the commentary teams.

Following approval from the International Tennis Federation (ITF) it will be used to aid umpires with disputed line calls. This is something that may add a new dimension to four-time champion John McEnroe’s vociferous objections on-court at the Royal Albert Hall.

Hawk-Eye system founder Paul Hawkins said, “Calling lines is a tough job – everyone wants it to be the players’ ability that decides the outcome of a match and now Hawk-Eye can help make that happen.

Masters favourite John McEnroe said, “I’m all for it, it’s about time it was introduced. Once again the Champions Tour is leading the way in innovations in the tennis circuit.

Google To Supply Search For Opera’s Mobile Browsers

Google will supply the default search function for Opera Software’s mobile browsers, the company said Thursday. Opera Software supplies two separate browsers for mobile and wireless devices.

In a statement, Opera said: “Google will be the default search partner for the mobile browsers: Opera Mobile and Opera Mini.”

Opera Software’s Opera Mini browser, a mobile browser is due for formal unveiling next month.

“It’s of great importance to have a search partner on board before the announcement,” said Christian Jebsen, Opera’s COO, said in a telephone interview Thursday. “We’ve been exploring different ways to make the product user-friendly. If you press the 9 (button), it takes you right to Google for searching.”

Jebsen said users of Opera Mini can still use the more established way of accessing a search engine, simply by calling up book-marked search engines. He noted that Opera is comfortable with Google as a partner because it has had a good working relationship with the search colossus for several years.

While Opera has not been charging users for its Mini browser, Jebsen said the firm has been exploring revenue-generating options and the arrangement with Google should eventually bear fruit in that regard.

Opera Software supplies two major browsers for mobile and wireless devices. Earlier this month, Opera quietly released a preview of its Opera Mini. Early user reaction has generally been complementary. Complete details will be reported at next month’s unveiling of Opera Mini.

The Mini version operates on WAP-equipped cell phones, while the more robust Opera Mobile version is generally offered as an add-on to mobile and wireless devices for a small user fee.

Opera has been battling rumors of an acquisition by Google. Earlier this week, Opera put down more rumors of an acquisition by Microsoft by saying it was not for sale.
