Mobile technology moves to the 4G

BSNL to Push WiMax to 80,000 Villages

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited has plans to connect 80,000 villages with wireless broadband.

Rajesh Kumar, joint DDG, strategic planning, BSNL informed that the project would be undertaken in phases. The organization has formed a cluster of 1,000 block headquarters, scattered across India, for the first phase. These blocks will cover around 10,000 villages. WiMax installation will provide broadband access to customers within a radius of 25 kilometers.

USO will float tender for this project next month. “We have the infrastructure ready, we will invite bids to procure equipment,” said Kumar. BSNL has a budget of Rs 150 crore for equipment procurement, he added. First phase of the project will be completed in the next two years.

Nasscom hails Bush comment on HI-B visas

US President George W Bush’s reported comments on the US looking at the possibility of increasing the number of HI-B visas — granted to Indian professionals to work in the US — has received an enthusiastic response from Nasscom.

The Nasscom President, Mr Kiran Karnik, told Business Line, ” We welcome such an initiative. This step would be mutually beneficial to both the countries.” He said that last year the senate immigration Bill that dealt with the issue could not be converted into legislation due to problems of illegal immigrants.

LIC to go paperless, digital by 2010

Shedding its image of a brick-and-mortar organisation, the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) is all set venture into the digital era.

The corporation is close to signing a Rs 1100 crore Electronic Data Management System (EDMS) contract with a consortium-led by global IT major Hewlett-Packard (HP) that will transfer it to the paperless world by 2010.

HP will lead a consortium of IT firms, including Mumbai-based Vakrangee Softwares for three-and-a-half year that would entail digitalization of its 20 crore policies. The global IT major would also have to rollout LIC’s EDMS initiative and computerize all its 2,048 branches.

The technical and commercial evaluation process has been completed, and a formal announcement would be made sometime later sources close to development said.

IT majors Wipro, Electronic Corporation of India Ltd (ECIL), Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and hardware major CMS Computers were the other bidders for the project.

TCS to set up largest offshore centre in Karnataka

India’s top IT firm Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) is planning to set up an offshore development centre in South Karnataka. The company will invest nearly Rs 1,000 crore to set up the centre, which will house close to 2,000 people, sources close to the development told HT.

This would be one of the largest centres of TCS in the country, which currently employs 83,000 people across the world.

This offshore development centre would be undertaking high-margin work such as writing codes for ERP and other package implementation along with some application development and maintenance work.

Infosys, Wipro to be big players at meet

IT bellwethers Infosys and Wipro are participating in the World Economic Forum (WEF) at Davos in Switzerland in a big way to showcase India’s technology prowess and its expertise in handling socio-economic issues to global leaders.

In separate statements here, both the Bangalore-based tech firms said their head honchos — Nandan M. Nilekani of Infosys and Azim H. Premji of Wipro — will be attending various sessions and interacting with leaders on emerging economies, global trading system and technology innovations at the annual meet that began in the Swiss ski resort on Wednesday.

Cognizant founder raises $225 mn fund

Kumar Mahadeva, founder of US based software services company Cognizant Technologies, has raised a $225-million fund to invest in Indian companies.

Kumar has teamed up with Ramanan Raghavendran, who had earlier raised a fund called Connect Capital, to raise this fund under Kubera Partners on the London Stock Exchange (LSE). Mr Raghavendran is an experienced private equity fund manager and has worked with firms like Insight Venture Partners, General Atlantic, TH Lee Putnam Ventures and McKinsey in his past avatars.

LSE Alternative Investment Market (AIM) is increasingly becoming favoured to raise funds for making investments in Indian sectors or companies. About 15 Indian and India-focused companies have raised funds on AIM in the past one year. They have raised over $4 billion from AIM

DoT’s Rs 4k-cr project to set up 8,000 towers in rural India

The department of telecommunications (DoT) on Friday invited bids from all telecom operators and 22 stand-alone tower companies for setting up about 8,000 telecom towers across the country at an estimated cost of Rs 4,000 crore.

The government will provide the capital to set up these towers from the Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF) through a bidding process. This marks the largest project of its kind undertaken by the communications and IT ministry in the country.
