RCOM, Tatas now lock horns in Africa

Africa is the new battle ground for the Tatas and Reliance Communications. While Reliance’s 100% subsidiary Flag Telecom plans to build a cable system linking South Africa to Madagascar and Mauritius to expand its global network, Tatas-owned VSNL is in talks with the EASSy cable consortium, Africa’s upcoming cable system, to offer global connectivity on its network.

Last month, RCL chairman Anil Ambani had announced that Flag would invest $1.5 billion to lay an additional 50,000 km of undersea optic fibre capable of carrying voice, video and data, which would give the an additional capacity of 1.28 terabytes per second. The second phase of this cable is slated to cover Africa touching countries such as Kenya, Mozambique, Republic of South Africa, Tanzania, Madagascar and Mauritius.

This proposed cable is seen as a rival to upcoming…………..

Apple, Cisco tussle over iPhone name

Cisco’s Linksys division last month launched a family of “iPhone” devices. The Linksys phones include WiFi antennas, allowing users to make VOIP calls using their home wireless networks and services such as Skype or Yahoo Messenger.

According to a statement from Cisco on Tuesday, Apple has repeatedly sought permission from the networking company to use the iPhone moniker, and the two companies have recently been engaged in “extensive” negotiations over the name. Cisco said it expected Apple to quickly sign an agreement the company sent over late Monday to use the name, but as of press time, Apple still hadn’t signed.

iPhone has been the rumored name for Apple’s cell phone…………………..

Cisco not apple announces iPhone branded VoIP phones

Extracted From EnGadget

We hate to break it to everybody who thought the inevitable Apple phone was going to be called the iPhone, but Cisco, which has apparently had the trademark on the name since the 90s, is launching a line of Linksys “iPhone” VoIP devices (yes, that’s right, lower case “i”, uppercase “P”).

Why wait until now to launch the iPhone name? We can’t say for sure, but we imagine Cisco was probably trying to work behind the scenes to sell the rights to the name to Apple, but things didn’t pan out — but since “iPhone” is already a fairly ubiquitous brand without even being launched, hey, why not run with it? We won’t dwell long on the loss of the name iPhone to describe the Applephone (which is what we’ll henceforth be calling it), so on to the gear.

Expect to see the $180 iPhone Dual-Mode Internet Telephony Kit for Skype CIT400 (pictured), which from what we can tell, is merely a Skype handset; also, announced is the $200 iPhone Wireless-G Phone for Skype WIP320 (pictured after the break), a SIP VoIP phone.

What an Awesome Reply man

It was a hot meeting at the office conference hall. All the people from the department had been called. The VP was looking much tensed.

The mood was so bad. My friend asked me -“Hey, what is this meeting all about? I told – May be they will decide on when to have the next meeting. People around smiled at each other. Then the VP started talking. It was about the recent attrition rate that was so high. Around 10 people had put in their papers. All experienced guys. It was quarter end and so work was huge. If we do not complete the work on time, we need to be paying heavy penalty said the VP. The VP turned to the manager and told “Hey – take how much ever resources you want. Recruit or take them from other departments. But complete the work in another 25 days. Take people and complete it man.

To this the sweet manager replied “Sir! Give me one wife and nine months and I shall show you results. Don’t give me nine wives and one month. I cannot do anything.” Everyone looked at him blank.

The VP was not prepared for this answer. We looked at the manager and thought “What an Awesome Reply man!”

Security threats on Web more serious this year

It was the year when cybercriminals targeted everything from MySpace to Wikipedia, and even a Web site maintained by a Kentucky Boy Scout troop wasn’t safe for casual browsing.

Computer security experts said 2006 was also the year that hacking stopped being a hobby and became a lucrative profession practiced by an underground of computer developers and software sellers.  …

Brand Infosys and Brand Nilekani work together

Infosys Technologies and its chief executive, Nandan Nilekani, have lately taken a couple of steps which offer a glimpse into how the two are evolving on their journey towards a single goal – becoming a “globally respected” brand.

In this there is a triple emphasis on being global, challenging the established industry leaders and being respected.

In a break with tradition which earlier forbade working directors other than the chairman from joining other boards, Nilekani has recently joined the Reuters board. All working directors can now join one such board to get a feel of how global firms work so that they can make Infosys a truly global company.

Viruses that will lurk in 2007

Social networking sites like YouTube, Orkut and MySpace, that were a mad rage among young netizens last year, may be hot targets for virus attacks this year.

Research by F-Secure tells us about dangerous vulnerabilities in Cross Site Scripting (XSS) that is used on some of these sites.

Niraj Kaushik, country manager, Trend Micro (India & SAARC) speculates, “Web threats will impact consumers and corporations alike through confidential information leakage, identity theft, bot infection, adware/spyware installation, and the like.” …
