Google denies browser plans

Reuters -Thursday, June 01, 2006 00:32 IST

Google Inc has no plans to build a Web browser software to compete with rival Microsoft Corp, Chief Executive Eric Schmidt said on Wednesday.

At a conference call with Wall Street analysts, Schmidt dismissed speculation that the company aimed to tie together its Web search and other services to compete with Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, the world’s dominant Web browser.

“It looks like people have some good browsers choices already, Schmidt said.

“We would not build a browser for the fun of building a browser, he said.

Google encourages its customers to use a variety of alternatives to Internet Explorer, particularly the open-source Firefox browser.

Mergers may be next trend for big Internet companies

Speculation is rife on Wall Street that a big Internet deal or alliance is in the works, with Google, Yahoo, eBay or Microsoft as possible partners — and a Yahoo-eBay partnership seen as most likely.

A partnership or merger between eBay and Yahoo! is the most strategically feasible,” a report authored by analyst Imran Khan and the JP Morgan Internet team said on Monday.

A combined company would have the leading position in auctions, communications, payments, graphical advertising, audience reach, and geographic breadth,” the report said.

Goodbye Clutter, Hello Clever

Yahoo! simplifies its home page in a redesign that showcases an array of offerings and a more customized and intuitive approach

Compared with Google’s (GOOG) sparse, minimalist look, Yahoo!’s (YHOO) style is more tchochkes and patterned wallpaper. So it’s hard not to view the redesign of Yahoo’s home page — a noticeably sleeker version unveiled in preview form on May 16 — as the search engine’s attempt to Google-ize its identity. And given that Google’s stripped-down offering counted 27% more unique users in April than in the same period last year, while Yahoo’s uniques only rose by 11%, imitation would seem a sound strategy.

Google Sponsors First European Code Jam

On the lookout for talent, Google said Tuesday that it is holding its first European code jam.

Registration for the competition, in which programmers compete online to solve programming problems, starts Tuesday and ends May 23. A May 23 qualification round will whittle the number of participants to 500. Rounds one and two will reduce the number of competitors to the top 50, who compete in the final round on June 29. Google will send the 50 finalists to Dublin for the weekend for the competition.

All finalists receive cash prizes, with the first winner receiving 2,500 euros (US$3,100). Google will hand out a total of 30,000 euros to the top 50 contestants.

Competitors must be legal residents of Europe, Africa or the Middle East.

Schmidt’s Google Goes To Authorities About MSN

Google, led by Chief Executive Eric Schmidt, seems to be feeling the heat already from the impending update of Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, the Web browser which is used by 85% of the world’s PCs and which is set to be released with Windows Vista later this year as an updated version 7.

IE 7, it appears, could put a dent in Google’s lucrative grip on the search market thanks to a slim white search box located in the browser’s top right hand corner. Google’s concern is that the integrated search tool points users towards Microsoft’s MSN search engine, leaving them less likely to stumble across Google’s all-important ads.

The complaint has initially prompted some to chortle at what looks to be a case of the pot calling the kettle black–Google happens to have its own search tool integrated into Microsoft’s rival web browsers Firefox and Opera. But Google is deadly serious. A spokesman for the search giant, Steve Langdon, said that the company had approached the U.S. Department of Justice and European Commission about the issue, though no formal complaint had been filed.

Pro-Firefox Group Launches Mission To Destroy IE

Despite the vaunted rhetoric, the Firefox Four might be waging an uphill battle. A recent Forrester report on Web browsers found that Internet Explorer still dominates — by far. AOL follows IE in a distant second place, with Firefox, Opera, Safari, and other alternative browsers scrapping for what is left.

Styling themselves as political activists, a Massachusetts group has launched a concerted effort to inveigle Internet Explorer users to switch to the Firefox Web browser. The focal point of the movement is a site called ExplorerDestroyer.com.

In addition to talking up the strengths of Firefox, the site highlights a new Google AdSense program that offers $1 to online publishers for every referred netizen who downloads Firefox.

Microsoft Launches Specialized Search Engine

Windows Live Academic Search scours the Web for journal articles, academic papers, and notes and slides from scholarly conferences.

Microsoft may be lagging in the search market, but give its engineers credit for moving fast to catch up.

The software company launched a new search engine for academic journals last week, and while it’s yet another example of Microsoft trailing Google in online software (digital maps and desktop searches also come to mind), Microsoft is showing what looks like a new willingness to take some chances and loosen up its release schedules.
