Four New Phones From Nokia

At Nokia’s annual Capital Market Days, the company announced four new mobile phones including three mid-range models — the Nokia 6300, Nokia 6290 and the Nokia 6086 — as well as the Nokia 2626 targeted to consumers in entry markets. All four models are expected to begin shipping in the first quarter of 2007.

Nokia Sees Higher Handset Sales, Lower Profit Margins

At its annual Capital Market Days event, Nokia presented its forecasts for the industry and its financial targets for the next one to two years.

In his keynote presentation, Nokia President and CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo said, “To enjoy the full benefits of the continuing growth of the global device market that Nokia expects, we’ve made a number of important strategic moves and organizational changes, and have put our marketing and design efforts into a sharper focus. Verizon Wireless to offer YouTube on mobiles

Verizon Wireless said on Tuesday it would deliver selected video clips from YouTube to cell phones starting in December in a bid to increase subscriptions to its mobile media service.

YouTube, the leading online video sharing site which was bought by Internet search leader Google Inc. this month, said it hopes to expand beyond computers to phones. It did not reveal the financial terms of the deal.

Commercial ingenuity will find a way around the most carefully constructed official restrictions. On the face of it, this would seem to be a fair assessment of Wal-Mart’s proposed entry into India partnering Bharti.

That would be an error. A more accurate conclusion would be that policy seeks to tilt the playing field in favour of Indian retail players rather than to keep foreign Big Retail out.

Novell wins 28 million-user deal with BT

BT has chosen Novell’s eDirectory as the hub for user services on 21CN, its next-generation converged voice, data and video network.

The directory system will store up to 28 million user profiles, and will authenticate customers for access to services such as video-on-demand and IP telephony.

“It’s one of the largest directory implementations across Europe,” said Novell’s UK sales director Paul Roberts. “eDirectory will be in the middle, talking to all the other applications. One thing BT needs to do is capture identities for all its customers.”

RIL plans private GSM network

Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries Ltd is preparing to apply for permission to set up a nation-wide broadband telecom network for internal (non-commercial) use.

The network will in part use the global system for mobile (GSM) standard for mobile communications, as well as the latest broadband wireless technologies like WiMax to support a number of business applications.

The idea behind the network, which may entail investments of up to $750 million in the long term, is to connect Reliance Industries entire set-up in the country onto a common intelligent backbone.

What is IP television?

Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) is digital television delivered on your television (and not PC) through high speed internet (broadband) connection. In this service, channels are encoded in IP format and delivered to the TV through a set top box. IPTV service also includes video on demand, which is similar to watching video CDs/DVDs using a VCD/DVD player.

How does it work?

IPTV converts a television signal into small packets of computer data like any other form of online traffic such as email or a web page. There are three main components of IPTV. First, the TV and content head end, where the TV channels are received and encoded and also other content like videos which are stored. Strong Global Demand for MMS and Mobile Email

Multimedia messaging (MMS) has become a popular service among mobile phone users worldwide and mobile email may have even greater potential, according to a survey commissioned by the GSM Association.

More than 40% of the 3,061 consumers surveyed by Circle Research in Europe, North America and Asia regard MMS, which allows mobile phone users to swap pictures, music and video, as an indispensable service, while 38% see mobile email in the same light.

When asked which mobile data services they prefer, the respondents ranked text messaging (SMS) first, followed by email and MMS ranked third.

Samsung Develops Super Thin Phone Screen

Samsung Electronics says that it has developed the thinnest reported LCD panel, one no thicker than a credit card at 0.82mm, which is 0.07mm thinner than the panel previously reported to be the world’s slimmest. The company also announced that it has developed a new mobile technology, which it is calling, “i-Lens“, for integrating the entire panel assembly, including a protective layer, into a single, thinner module that is more shock-resistant and easier to read than conventional panels.

Executive Vice President Yun Jin-hyuk, in charge of the Mobile Display Team within the Samsung Electronics LCD Business division, said, “Samsung’s R&D initiatives, including LCD module thickness reduction and reinforced shock resistance, will enable our customers to develop truly differentiated and more reliable, ultra-thin mobile products.”
